In this episode, come with me to the sun-drenched town of Céret in southern France, a place where art, food, and landscape melt together beneath the foothills of the Pyrenees. Known as the cherry capital of France, Céret bursts into life each spring as its famous cherries ripen earlier than almost anywhere else in the country.
We explore the history behind these prized fruits, from their rise to national fame in the early 20th century to the traditions that still define the region today, including the wonderfully eccentric cherry pit–spitting competition at the annual Cherry Festival.
Along the way, we wander through shaded squares and colorful streets once loved by Picasso, discover why the local terroir produces such exceptional cherries, and dive into the many ways Céret cherries are enjoyed—from rustic clafoutis and elegant savory dishes to preserves, cocktails, and pairings with the fortified wines of nearby Banyuls-sur-Mer.

Plus, I’ve included two recipes: one for a delicious madeleine trifle and another for a moist, buttery cake.
For the trifle, you’ll need madeleines. If you want to try making them yourself, this truly is the best recipe. Believe me, it’s taken me quite a few tries to get there! In this post you can also discover the history of madeleines. Read it all here.
