Personally, I remember many of his paintings as quite, if not happy, but as upbeat. Every painting "a cry of anguish" what a horrible feeling for anyone, love his sunflowers in particular, as for me, they stand as a positive metaphor for life on the brighter side of our existence and lived human endavors. His ultimate death, cynics could argue about the time, being somewhat on time or missed timing...but yet again, for myself and I sincerely guess, quite a few others, it's a travesty of life, one should have been well lived, and as his art today we'll received.
Your article awakened memories of seeing his Sunflowers in person and certainly fuelled my own desire to be more mindful of Van Gogh again and again, of the person, but also his life and today's popularity.
Very true, art connects with a whole facette of emotions within us, but also through external stimulation and discovery, a wholesome and extremely satisfying experience.

Many thanks.
Thanks for sharing such lovely words, Henry. It's amazing how art can touch people in so many different ways.
